I'd have to disagree with you on that one...When you're at the top, you have to take the heat for every little thing that goes wrong. People are always looking to you for advice, blame, answers, etc...I'd have to say the wealthy and comfortable are among the most stressed people I've seen.

Second point, I've known 2 people who have offed themselves, both when I was in High School. One was a closet lesbian, so her stress level was prolly through the roof. She was a model student, but I guess hidding the fact she was a muff diver must of caught up with her. The day she offed herself, her parents were out of town and she called 9-1-1 to tell them where they could find her body...fukked up!

IMHO, I think suicide is just the easy way out...I been in a million fukked up situations, but never once did I ever think capping myself would be the only way out.

Instead of worrying bout the boss not likin their project, and thus making even MORE money, they have to worry about:
a) whether they can keep the lights and gas on
b) whether they can keep the water on
c) will they have someplace to live next week
d) which utilities and payments can they put off for another month or so, so they can take care of the payments they put off last month
e) how to find a decent paying job using public transportation (bwahahahaha! for most of America)
f) how to stretch out the food bill, and make it last
g) how to take care of their children
h) will they have a job tomorrow?

The rich? It's all about keeping up with the joneses, and their perception about how OTHER people will look at them.... that, and the refusal to accept responsibility, to accept the bad consequences, for their own actions, like Smackie's embezzling asshole above.

Now isn't that ironic? The poor are the ones the rich look down upon as never accepting responsibility, being made up of lesser stuff... and its the affluent more likely to off themselves.

Anyway, I think a lot of this falls under: the bigger they are the harder they fall. Most successful people are that way because they have very high expectations for themselves, and are never satisfied. That may be chemical, or not, I don't know or care. But when the self-dissatisfaction of not ever truly succeeding (by their own standards) becomes self-loathing, depression may set it. I think suicide usually results from people coming to the rational and correct realization that they will never be happy, no matter what.

There are other cases though. I dated a girl whose father killed himself after her mother died of breast cancer. He fell into a deep depression after her death that sucked the life out of him. Not the same man who had built a huge client base with Dean Witter over 40 years. He just couldn't live without her. Really sucked for his daughter, though, having both parents die within a year. She was 23, but you're never old enough for that.

Maybe in that case, he came to the rational realization that he'd never truly be happy again since his wife was gone.

That's not what you said. You asked, "Why is suicide almost exlusively the enclave of the wealthy and the comfortable?

I take the phrase "almost exclusively" to mean "almost without exception." This perception would lead one to believe that it is relatively rare for a poor or middle-class individual to commit suicide, which I don't believe is true. I'd believe that it is more prevalent among the wealthy, but I wouldn't characterize the proportions as "almost exclusively." Hence, my allegation of gross overgeneralizing.

Another factor might be guilt. Someone who enjoys the good life has more time to be reflective, and may ponder why he/she was blessed with health, wealth, and family while so many others are not so fortunate. A sense of irrational guilt over the inequities of life may lead someone in Fat City to seek the nearest shower rod.
